RE: Scotch Eggs

Great thread Jon! We've been doing Ren Faires full-time for twelve years, we have a booth at the Michigan Faire "Uncommon Adornments"...Celtic Jewelry. ...after this long doing them, Scotch Eggs are one of the few Faire-foods I still love to eat!

RE: Restoring a Lodge Cast Iron Skillet

I love a science experiment as much as the next guy...well, usually quite a bit more...and the method Karl posted does work, but if it were me in this situation, I'd hit up a friend (One that is into old cars, and you're guaranteed success), and ask to borrow an angle-grinder...put a wire-wheel on it and your pan will be as good as new in no time. ...of course, then you'll have to season it, personally, I think Crisco, Bacon "Grease" or Lard works best, Lard being my first choice, Bacon Grease is darn near a tie though...you do save all of the fat when you cook bacon and put it in the fridge, right? ;) Hope this helps!

RE: Here is a new one, Steak ON coals?

Keywest, I like you more and more everyday! Alton Brown addressed this on one of his shows, another one covered the "Never wash a mushroom, just brush it off" myth. ...gotta say, though, I still brush or wipe off my shrooms instead of washing, old habits die hard!

RE: Here is a new one, Steak ON coals?

HMMMMPPPHHH. I guess I'll try to google something for this. Not sure I really WANT to try this, but who knows. I'll usually try pretty much anything once, but not to the exteme that the guy on the Food Channel does! He goes too far for my tastes. Alton Brown going too far??????????? ...Blasphemy!!! ;) j/k...I saw the episode, he was doing a marinated flank-steak to make fajitas. He blew off the coals right before slapping the meat on with a hair-dryer to get rid of the ashes...looked like it worked fine, but I'm with Keywest...I'd rather rig a grate an inch above the coals than throw it right on, but, then again, I haven't tried it, so I can't judge. lol

RE: Electric/Hydraulic Brake Help Needed...

Thanks guys...yes it's disc brakes...sorry, gone visiting my Daughter and Grandkid. All connections are good, all settings good, I'll check the fluid level, don't know why I didn't think of that. Someone told me the Prodigy isn't compatible with my brake setup? ...Update...like a dummy, I assumed the hydraulic tank for the slides and landing gear was the same system as the hydraulic brakes, so after researching, found the brake actuator, and, of course, it's empty. Now I get to bleed all of the brakes, no huge deal, and figure out where the leak is...also...the Prodigy isn't compatible, question is, have I damaged the actuator to have used it for the last 3k miles or so? Thanks!

Electric/Hydraulic Brake Help Needed...

This one has me puzzled. Trailer brakes are electric over hydraulic, controller is Prodigy. Halfway through our trip, going down an off-ramp, I noticed things weren't slowing very quick so I pulled the manual lever, and nothing...trailer brakes weren't working at all. ...and controller wasn't throwing any codes, settings were fine. I am clueless on this one, any advice?

RE: an interesting concoction for dinner...

I see you're in CT, but if you smoke your own pork, and like Southern food, ANY recipe that calls for hamhocks...red beans and rice, bean soup, green beans and potato's etc, sub your pork for the hocks, you'll never go back.

If you can find Sweet Sue brand, give it a shot, it's my favorite.

RE: 2003 Dodge 2500 transmissions..

It depends on the build date of the truck, and if it's a Cali truck or not whether it has the 47re or the 48re Trans...if the build date is after 1/1/03, and it wasn't sold in CA it's the 48re, and a stronger trans, if not it's the 47re which has problems if you tow heavy, or up the power on the truck. (Or if the previous owner did). ..........EDIT............ you didn't say if it was auto or manual, the above applies to auto, if it's the 6-speed stick, it's darn near bullet-proof.

RE: I'm so Excited!!!!

Ditto on what Jim recommends, Geno's are awesome guys, they have a lot of nice products for trucks too, the website isn't the best, so order a catalog. If you decide to join the TDR, thdy send out a Geno's catalog with their club magazines.

RE: I'm so Excited!!!!

Congrats on the truck, you'll love it! Biggest advice I can give you is to join the Turbodieselregister.com. It's only for Cummins owners, and they are a HUGE wealth of information, and a great bunch of people. The '03 is great, for one it's (I think) the last year with zero emissions equipment. There were a few problems with the '03's that were big enough to be Technical Service Bulletins, but not big enough to be recalls, and I knew about all of them ahead of time due to the TDR... even if you don't do your own maintenance/repairs, you can save a lot of stress and headaches, just knowing what are the main problems with the '03's, it was the first year for the common-rail injectors, and different body-style, so, of course it had some glitches. ...main ones being the Carter lift-pump, and the non-greaseable U-Joints. If you have the 47re trans, it can be a weak-link, but doubtful at the weight you're pulling. IMHO, you have the best year of the Dodge Cummins (OK, 24 valve at least, I'm a HUGE fan of the old 12 valves, but I digress!)...so again, Congrats!

RE: Thanksgiving is Coming.

Usually between the layers are oysters in a turducken. I can get them here at my supermarket and they are wicked good. "Wicked Good"? Ok there Mr. Keywest, do you have roots in the Boston area? ;)

RE: Thanksgiving is Coming.

Really happy to see that so far no one has mentioned that Bird, our least favorite meat. We usually do a Pork Roast or a big fat Hen with Cornbread Dressing and giblet gravy. Then there's always Sue's carrot casserole. Dave If it's your least favorite, you just ain't making it right! ;)

Hydraulic Landing Gear Question...

I have a faulty solenoid on one of my front legs that needs replacing. I do most of my own maintenance, just never dealt with this...is it fairly easy to do by yourself? If anyone can give me tips/instructions, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

RE: To Glaze or not to Glaze, is that the question?

I glaze, but like many, prefer not to use the packet.

RE: Dodge Ram 2500

Where did you go fishingrv?? ;) I'd love to hear more input...especially on which years the Cummins wasn't "in your opinion" the best diesel engine on the market? Enlighten us ;)

RE: Final Results Chrysler/48RE Drama

Let me see if I have this straight! Camping man heard that someone else had a 48RE failure so now they are all junk!! That is one of the problems that I have with this forum. People making profound statements based on nothing factual. On second thought it is sort of funny to see something out of left field I guess. This is a true case of "OPEN MOUTH, INSERT FOOT" I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure camping man was being sarcastic. You'd think that great big smiley face icon, and the dodge truck in his signature would've given it away. :E Maybe a true case of "OPEN MOUTH, INSERT FOOT" on surveyorjp's part ;)

RE: Final Results Chrysler/48RE Drama

There's a reason the CUmmins was dialed back with the slushpump until recently. That reason being: the transmission could not handle it. The 5 and 6-speed manuals could and can handle just about anything you can throw at them. Manuals - Only if you put an aftermarket clutch ahead of it! Sorry, but not so...a whole bunch of people out there (including myself) are putting a lot of power through their manuals with little to no clutch slippage. Mine has the NV 5600, and I have a Smarty downloader that I have to put on the higher levels to slip the clutch, and I have 120,000 miles, and have been towing to capacity from day one.
